Oscar needed a more efficient, scaleable way to schedule patients for health screenings.
Understanding the health of our membership is an important aspect of Oscar’s business. It allows the company to make better strategic decisions and reduce payments into the Affordable Care Act’s risk adjustment pool.
Health screenings (a free phone consultation with a doctor) are a key way that Oscar assesses members’ health, but scheduling them was time consuming. We set out to enable members to schedule screenings themselves via our website.

I explored a range of options to determine the best way to present available appointments.
My team and I evaluated the pros and cons of each direction, considering both the user perspective and the engineering lift.
I leveraged our design system to develop a solution that was as easy to build as it was to use.
We developed an experience that was low effort but high impact, using several ready-to-go components from our design system.
I also included a “next iteration” section that showed how we could improve the tool in the future.
As with all projects, I considered how the tool could evolve in the future. This helps my team developed a shared vision and make better, more future-proof decisions during implementation.

The new scheduling tool allows patients to see availabilities for the whole month at a glance.
Patients can choose a date and time that works for them.
A clear, concise description helps them know what to expect.
Location confirmation is quick, but not missable.
A simple review page makes it easy to complete their booking.
We developed a simple but powerful tool to increase health screenings in a low-cost, tech-driven way.
